Water Recycling Projects Under Construction

East Bayshore Recycled Water Project
Recycled water for the East Bayshore project goes through microfiltration and extra disinfection at this plant in Oakland

EBMUD has two large multi-phased water recycling projects under construction, and both have begun supplying recycled water.

East Bayshore Recycled Water Project

When completed, the East Bayshore project will supply an annual average of 2.2 million gallons per day (mgd) of recycled water to portions of Alameda, Albany, Berkeley, Emeryville and Oakland. The recycled water will be used in place of drinking water to irrigate landscapes, flush toilets, restore wetlands and for industrial purposes. The first customers began service in April 2008 and used almost 29 million gallons of recycled water in 2011.

Pipeline construction to fill gaps in the transmission pipeline from Emeryville to Albany will start in 2012. EBMUD has designed the first pipeline segment of the East Bayshore Recycled Water Pipeline - MacArthur Maze project. Click on the link to learn more details about the pipeline construction.

San Ramon Valley Recycled Water Program

When completed, the San Ramon Valley Recycled Water Program will serve about 2.4 mgd of recycled water to EBMUD irrigation customers in portions of Blackhawk, Danville and San Ramon. The first customers began receiving recycled water in 2006 and customers used almost 192 million gallons of recycled water in 2011.

The San Ramon Valley Recycled Water Program is a joint effort between EBMUD and the Dublin San Ramon Services District to serve their respective customers. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, San Francisco District, is a federal partner in this project, providing construction management. Federal stimulus funding was appropriated in 2009, accelerating the pipeline construction schedule. EBMUD provides construction management assistance.

Three miles of pipeline were installed in Danville and San Ramon in 2011. Expanding the San Ramon Valley Recycled Water Program will require the funding, siting, designing and construction of two pump stations to bring recycled water from the treatment plant in Pleasanton to portions of San Ramon, Danville and Blackhawk. Additional recycled water pipelines still need to be constructed to reach customers in these areas.

The next phase of pipeline construction is being planned for the Bishop Ranch Business Park area in San Ramon (date and scope of work to be determined.)
